It has become a reality: The fun-loving, selfie-taking, phone-hooked generation known as ‘Millennials’ can afford homes. While some people may still think of them as young kids, they’re all grown up—and they are becoming homeowners. Millennials — those born post 1980 through the early 2000s — are moving out of their childhood homes and forming their own households. Millennials now make up 42 percent of all homebuyers and 56 percent of the nation’s first-time homebuyers. They are a dominant force in the housing market, and according to a recent Pew Research Center report, have surpassed the baby boomers as the largest living generation.

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices announced the winner of its “Love Your Home” Sweepstakes held in conjunction with HGTV and its popular Good Bones home-renovation show. Aaron Zimmerman, a Sandy, Utah resident, was drawn for the $50,000 grand prize from nearly 5.7 million sweepstakes entrants. The sweepstakes also generated 12 weekly winners of $2,500 apiece. 

The entrant total set a record for Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices sweepstakes held in conjunction with HGTV, and was 77% above last year’s sweepstakes registrations. “This is a life changer for me and my family,” said Zimmerman, who with wife Kathryn is raising a 4-year-old son in the suburbs south of Salt Lake City.

Overview

According to the Park City Board of Realtors: The number of closed sales for the first quarter of 2017 in Summit and Wasatch Counties was the highest we’ve seen since 2007 – up 20% over 2016. Q1 also saw the highest number of pended sales on record. Additionally, there was a 26% increase over the previous year in total dollar volume. Growth continued to morph, and expand, encompassing outlying communities in the Wasatch Back as the entire market area was pushed to new peak levels.

According to first quarter statistics, the Summit and Wasatch County markets remain varied and complex to read, but stable in terms of positive growth. In Park City limits, when compared with last year's first quarter, there has been only a 1% change in average single family home price, suggesting an overall stabilization of the market in town. However, in key development areas like Canyons Village, there was a doubling in the number sales and a 22% increase in average price, suggesting pockets of intense growth where there is new inventory. Similarly, gated golf communities remain popular, and Red Ledges, Glenwild, Tuhaye, and Promontory all saw an increase in the number of sales and in average price.
